A Story and a Painting

 The Fox

New fallen snow covered the hill like a tight blanket. Slow winds sifted tree branches till there were no bare spots under trees and bushes.
All was white except where corn had stood in rows and weeds had grown.
It was a snow that quieted footsteps and a far away train whistle.

I climbed a hill to the open field.
A bright red fox stood on the field ridge. My footsteps didn't betray me; the fox watched some hidden creature and posed, not moving. I caught my breath, not wanting this vision to end.
How long we both kept our positions in the field there way no way to measure. Time didn't exist for the fox, and it ceased to exist for me.

Which one of us would break the spell of silence?

A small breeze touched the fox's tail.
The trance was broken.
He sniffed the air and my presence was revealed.

One quick look at me and the fox was gone over the ridge.

Your talents never end, Debra. This painting and story to go with it seemed to transport me to the scene. The stark contrast and depth between the background, the white snow, and the fox amongst the wintry vegetation is striking. Simply beautiful, Debra. I hope you never stop sharing your paintings!

I love your painting-and your story too.
I love watching the fox we had them at the woods property and we see them once in awhile here at the lake too
bitter winter is coming our way soon - we have been spoiled though with warm weather hugs

I love the story and the painting! The fox is my favorite of the wild critters around here, so it seems quite real to me.

I love the photo of the fox. I still can't read online with my eye. It is healing though. I hope you had a nice Christmas and wishing you and your family the very best for 2026
