Paperclay people

I've been making paperclay and papier mache people and animals.

Some need refining. I made a base form by crumpling up newspaper and taping it into the form I wanted using masking tape. I like making a 'sculpture' instead of sewing and stuffing figures-I can't make them stand up unless I use this method. They all have big feet and are awkward in a friendly way...

I'm almost done filling cracks and smoothing out the surface as much as I will do it-I don't sand paperclay-I just wet my hands or a cloth and rub out the bumps.

We have almost 2 feet of snow. I've been doing lots of shoveling, which I enjoy, while my husband uses the snow blower, which we are also thankful for. I had to make paths for my goose so she could go out in her pen. I've heard chickadees singing their spring song. I have my seed order in and I can't wait for the snow to go. I love the anticipation of spring. We live out in the country and have lots of wet lands around so we can hear peepers when it's mid-April. We are healthy and warm and thankful. I hope you are too.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your "people."
I like the larger feet as it adds to the arty Balance of them.
I see the bird shape I was wondering - have you made a goose also?

Oh what fun! If we had two feet of snow this is exactly what I would want to be doing! Besides cooking. Snow makes me hungry. I love your critters and people too! A wonderful dog and Goose, of course! I found one of the books you recommended - Costume in Detail. I bought it! Ouch! But, so worth it!

Good to read y'all are healthy, warm and thankful
Do you have the frogs that sound like ducks? I was amazed the first time I heard them.

Oh your little paperclay people and animals are amazing. I didn't know you made dolls. I was just looking back at the wool and rope you use for hair. I've used only yarn for hair on my dolls. Been a while since I've made any dolls.

I love your little people and animals. They really do have character all of them. And such joy that you simply just create with what you have at hand. Very well done, Debra❣️ Happy you are well❣️ May God bless you🙏

Good morning-wow I Love your clay people and animals-what a cool project. Barbara will love seeing this.
I was just thinking the other day how much I miss the sound of the peepers at our woods home. I will need to find a video of that so I can hear them again. we are to get very bitter temperatures soon and will last over a week-not good that always causes troubles.
Happy weekend hugs Kathy

I love these figures! Warm papier mache is so soothing to work with this time of year. The big bellied and big shouldered guys are full of personality. Looking forward to some finishes here!

Oh, what a delightful village of tiny people and curiously lovable creatures! I can't wait to see how all of these characters develop. They make me smile and feel hopeful. The snow is beautiful, Debra, and I'm sure the shoveling is good exercise. :) Stay warm and keep creating!

We have a few different croakers here, but I don't think we have those frogs. Last year we watched a HUGE frog jumping his way toward our house. He was really big! I went out to get him but he puffed up!! My husband said-Do NOT touch him!-so I didn't-he was making himself so scary. We wondered if he could have been poisonous, but I hope we don't have deadly frogs here!

Thank you! I love your paper mache people too!

Debra, do you make your own paper clay or use purchased already made? Your people are so smooth, much more so than mine.

Isn't that book amazing? I love all the little details the author includes too. What a great artist. I admit though, that the bird isn't a goose-even though it does look exactly like it with those enormous feet! I had to make the feet big so he's stand up and he still wants to fall over!

Thank you! I do need to make a goose-or a lot of them. I'm having trouble making this bird stand up, even though his feet are big.

Yarn is perfect for doll hair, and I forgot to include that in my list.

I hope everything is okay at your home through the cold weather. We hover in the 20's to 30 degrees. Our snow has gotten very hard-just glad there's not too much ice. I do love my peepers in the spring-I would miss them so much if we moved.

Thank you! I am anxious to get started on clothes and faces and hair do's. I will make up little stories about all of them too.

Thank you! Making these guys has helped me through the cold weather. I'm so glad you liked looking at them!

I use Creative Paperclay. I've seen the recipes for homemade clay-I don't want to go that far. My surfaces are very rough-it just doesn't show in the photos. I'll show a close-up later this week. I know you can get a very smooth surface if you use sand paper, but you must wear a mask for safety.

Dear friend you are the best. Thank you for your prayers. They are working. I love your clay people. So glad you are busy creating. We just got hit with snow and ice overnight. Lots of shovelling to be done for us as well. Take care. Hugs!
